I'm doing solo NPC ratting in low sec belts using a Thorax (blaster/MWD setup). I'd LIKE to try and get some of the salvage off the larger stuff I'm running into, BUT...
...I'm wondering how I should alter my Catalyst salvager setup to do this safely. Here's what I currently run:
[HIGH]
4 x tractor beams
4 x salvagers
[MED]
1 x 1MN MWD
1 x Cap Recharger I
[LOW]
3 x Cargo Expander I
Salvage items aren't big, so I know I can probably lose at least 1 cargo expander. Should I drop in some tank, in case I get any rats or PvPers on me? Or is that pretty pointless, given that I'll get scram'd pretty quick with PvPers
Should I drop a salvager and a tractor beam for 2 rails? I won't be doing much damage, again, with just 2 -- so that seems sort of pointless.
Or would it make the most sense to get a wrap drive stabilizer to escape a gate camp and/or belt PvPer? If I get webbed at long range (10km, right?), I MIGHT still be able to get the MWD to spool me up fast enough to warp, assuming I have the warp core stabilizer to facilitate that.
Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

So, without driving my catalyst around with some support, I'd be better off losing a heavy ion blaster on the Thorax and replacing it with a salvager.
Fair enough. I was a little timid about taking that Catalyst (my salvage love!) out into low sec and losing it. It's not an expensive ship, but the tractor beams are expensive to replace.

Wow -- really great community input, as usual. Damn -- wish I'd been playing this game for the past x # of years instead of blowing money on BF2, WoW and god knows what else.
Ass kissing aside , I decided to drop a salvager on my Thorax last night and head to 0.2 and 0.3 space. I did fine. I went to primarily empty star systems and didn't have any trouble, including 3 cruisers and on BC. The salvage, honestly, wasn't all that great -- the loot BEFORE salvage was better.
I MAY try fixing up that catalyst for fast getaways, but I'll hold off for now until I find myself being able to stay safe in a low sec system for longer than 3-4 belt runs before pirates show up.
